The CFDA Awards: 50 Years of Fashion

Last night was dedicated to fashion as the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) kicked off its night of golden glamour. In a double celebration, the CFDA celebrated their 50th anniversary and presented the CFDA Awards honoring the top talents from all areas of the fashion industry. The event took place at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center with Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers serving as the master of ceremonies and dressed for the occasion in…a dress.

Fashion insiders and a mix of celebrities walked the carpet in statement looks from designers that included Altuzarra, Alice + Olivia, Prabal Gurung, Marc Jacobs, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Sophie Theallet and more.

While some were white hot in flowing gowns, it was the bold prints that stole the spotlight. The glitziest of the glam, including Anna Wintour in Marc Jacobs and Devon Aoki in Alice + Olivia, added color to the carpet with lively summer looks.

Swarovski crystals weren’t the only things sparkling as actress Kate Bosworth walked the red carpet adorned in a multicolored Altuzarra design with black ankle-cuff pumps. Followed by Padma Lakshmi in a Fall 2012 Naeem Khan number, and Rachel Zoe in her own design, these ladies went for head-to-toe glimmer.

Industry veteran Tommy Hilfiger (bottom left) accepted the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Anna Wintour, honoring him for over 25 years of dedication to the fashion world including his honor as the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year in 1995. From his earliest work to the recent Fall 2012 Town and Country collection, Hilfiger has epitomized classic fashion. While his latest designs have swayed towards a more fun and flirtatious side thanks to his team, stylist Karl Templer and designer Peter Som, designs have remained effortless. Here’s to you Mr. Hilfiger.

The coveted Womenswear Designer of the Year Award went to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (above middle) who wore designs from their own collection, The Row, with jewels by Sidney Garber. The pair beat out Proenza Schouler and Michael Kors (pictured above with Joan Smalls in his own design), both past winners in the category. Billy Reid took home the award for Menswear Designer of the Year, and as predicted, Reed Krakoff won the Accessory Designer of the Year Award.

Other notable award recipients included Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons who was awarded the International Award, and Tabitha Simmons, Phillip Lim and Joseph Altuzarra who received the Swarovski Awards for emerging talent.

Johnny Depp, winner of the Fashion Icon Award, was unable to attend due to his work on the set of “The Lone Ranger;” however, the evening was made memorable by host Seth Meyers who paraded his own fashion ensemble of boxers and the see-through, lace dress Marc Jacobs wore to this year’s Met Gala.

Without further ado, we chose a few notable guests that were among the best dressed:

Zoe Saldana (left) was a vision in a black Prabal Gurung illusion-sectioned gown. Jessica Paré popped in a lacy, hot pink Jason Wu dress and Tiffany & Co. earrings. Julianne Hough (right) took the plunge in a crimson Kaufman Franco gown.

For those dying to see more of the action, not to worry, the 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards will be broadcast on Style.com for the first time in its history. Check it out here.

We’ll part with a photo of Seth Meyers as he was obviously the best dressed male of the evening…
