The audience saw red on red as a ruby red gown appeared on a red catwalk opening the Elie Saab Fall Couture 2013 collection. The colors of the 48-piece assortment of gowns seemed to have been plucked from a royal crown of rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. Like any beautiful jewel, each gown glimmered and sparkled – vying for the crowd’s attention.
Lengths ranged from floor-length gowns to leg-bearing teacup dresses, and although ruby red, sapphire blue and emerald green ruled the runway, Saab scattered in some soft taupe looks to help transition between the richer colors. Each dress had its own appeal, whether it was a plunging neckline, an open back, or a simple long-sleeved, one-shouldered look. However, there was one very obvious common denominator throughout – sequins, lots and lots of sequins.
As for hair and makeup, models sported slicked-back buns and smokey eyes to balance elegance with sultry. The overall dramatic look was toned down at times as Saab peppered in a touch of whimsy with the addition of shorter dresses – each featuring pockets and different necklines.
Closing the show was a breath-taking wedding dress that required three bridesmaids/models to carry the extravagant train. Is there any other way to close an Elie Saab show?
