Girl Model, a new film which debuted at SXSW, offers an inside look at the cutthroat modeling industry, specifically highlighting the young age at which many models start working.
The documentary follows a complex ‘supply chain’ between Siberia, Japan, and the U.S. within the modeling industry. The story is told through the eyes of scouts, agencies, and 13 year-old model Nadya Vall.
This ever-present issue is continuously addressed and has resulted in the creation of organizations like The Model Alliance, a not-for-profit that provides a platform for models and leaders in the fashion industry to organize to radically improve the conditions under which models work.
