Along with the drama and raw passion of the F. Scott Fitzgerald original novel, The Great Gatsby’s wardrobe stays true to the story’s roots in the upcoming film. Brooks Brothers, the official men’s clothier for the film, used archivists, designers, and merchants to research the textures, patterns, and styles popular in the Roaring 20’s.
The company worked with the film’s costume and production designer, Academy Award winner Catherine Martin, to produce 500+ day and evening ensembles, as well as timeless neckwear, accessories, and shoes for the cast and extras.
Martin notes that it is the connection between Brooks Brothers and Fitzgerald which makes the collaboration on the film such a perfect match: “Brooks Brothers is mentioned several times in Fitzgerald’s writings as a representation of the ultimate gentlemen’s purveyor of fine clothing to the American man of distinction.” She also added that Fitzgerald himself was a regular patron of Brooks Brothers.
Some of our favorite recreations are those seen on Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio. Handsome and well dressed? We’ll take it.
The suits, along with the rest of the costumes in the film, bring the timeless novel to life by showcasing the well bred sophistication of Gatsby that readers fell in love with.
The Great Gatsby opens in theaters nationwide on December 25, 2012. Can’t wait until then? Here’s a look at the trailer:
